English Party Internal Elections
In June 2026, the English Council voted for a new structure to enable the Liberal Democrats in England to better support our regions and local parties. The meeting abolished the English Council and its various committees and replaced it with a smaller English Party Board (the Executive of the English Party), a Regional Parties and Mediation Committee, an English Candidates Committee and a new English Party Assembly each autumn, which will commence in 2027.
Following these changes, the English Party Board approved new Elections Regulations at its meeting on 10 September 2026. These new regulations will be used for the internal elections in autumn 2026.
In autumn 2026, the following new positions will be elected:
Chair of the English Party Assembly - who shall have the role of Chair of the English Liberal Democrats, and shall be a member of the Federal Board.
Executive Officer for Candidates - shall be the Chair of the English Candidates Committee and the representative for the Liberal Democrats in England on the Joint Candidates Sub-Committee.
Executive Officer for Diversity - who will support the Party in England, the English Party Assembly, the English Party Board, and Regional Parties and Mediation Committee to consider and act upon the needs of diverse communities, and will contribute fully to the setting of strategy and decision-making at the English Party Board.
Principal Councillor and Executive Mayors representative to the English Party Board - who shall sit as a voting member of the English Party Board.
These officers will serve for a period of two years, from 1 January 2027 to 31 December 2028.
Please note that these positions are volunteer roles with no remuneration. The majority of the meetings of the English Party Board will be held online via Zoom.
The Standing Orders state that the English Party Board will meet for four quarterly review meetings (additionally as required) and for at least one strategy half day. Please click here for more information about the English Party Board.
